Writing Process
Getting to know you & idea generation.
We’ll sit down and start chatting. I want to know personality, interests, likes and dislikes, because we’re on the hunt to really pull out and polish up your student’s voice.
Next, we’ll walk through lots of prompts (this is the fun part) generating tons of ideas for your kid’s essay. There might be something they already know they want to write about – that’s great! We’ll still go through this part as some really fun details can come through that we’ll incorporate into their final essay.
Write the essay. Then do it again.
We’ll sit down together, because sometimes it’s easier to not check your phone when someone else is in the room, and because I want your student to write their essay somewhat quickly. Getting the words out is the hard part – we shouldn’t feel pressured to do it perfectly the first time. I often tell students: write a bad first draft. It frees them up to just write. Once they know what they want to say, we’ll take a lot of time figuring out how to say it.
Let’s edit to perfection.
We have the essay – now, let’s get it over the finish line. By the time we’re through here, grammar and spelling will be immaculate, voice and tone will be consistent and authentic throughout, there will be enough interesting imagery to compel a tired essay reader through to the finish, and there’s that little something different that sets the essay apart, making it unforgettable. Your story, told just right.
